Ancient books were written on palm leaves that were sewn (sutured) together and the word sutra came to mean a collection of proverbs, each on its own leaf, sewn together into a whole. The Kama Sutra is a collection of tips for living a pleasurable life. It’s most famous for its explicit instructions on sex (especially its descriptions of various sexual positions).Vatsya Who?The Kama Sutra was written by the Vedic philosopher Vatsyayana. This translation is attributed to Sir Richard Francis Burton, though his main contributions are the preface, introduction, and footnotes (he was unable to read Sanskrit). The actual work of translating the text was undertaken by Bhagwanlal Indraji and Shivaram Parshuram Bhide under the direction of Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot.Changes I’ve made to the text:Added almost 1500 words of introductory material, including my own essay, 6 Things You Didn’t Know Were in the Kama Sutra.Replaced outdated spellings (“Hindoo” becomes Hindu, “Sanscrit” becomes Sanskrit) and Americanized the spelling (words ending in –our now end in –or).Created a linked Table of Contents.Converted Burton’s footnotes into links for easier navigation.Made the reading smoother.
